What I do

By day I am the Learning Officer for the Bristol Dinosaur Project, University of Bristol and in my own time I work on a huge variety of freelance, nature-related opportunities.

Broadcasting

Have a weekly (Thursdays) wildlife slot on Faye Dicker's show at 5.45am on BBC Radio Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire; give bi-monthly newspaper reviews for BBC Radio Bristol's Breakfast show with Steve Le Fevre.

Extensive contributions to BBC Autumnwatch, BBC Autumnwatch Unsprung, BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Points West and Inside Out West.

Magazine writing and copy editing

Write features for magazines/journals eg BBC Wildlife, BBC Countryfile, British Birds and Birdwatch. Copy edit for journal papers, PhD theses and books.

Bird ID training

Deliver training courses and presentations from bird song identification to the secret lives of our garden birds.

Wildlife cruises

Provide wildlife commentary on Bristol Ferry boats, Bristol and RSPB Avocet cruises, Devon.

Wildlife Consulting

Wildlife consultant for natural history television companies eg BBC Natural History Unit and Tigress Productions (for the BBC One Show).

Complete bird surveys for the University of Bristol and British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).

Tour Leading

Wildlife tour leader for Naturetrek: Leading nature tours in February and May on the Somerset Levels; enabling people to spot whales and dolphins in the Azores and Monterey Bay, California; and showing people wolves and bustards in Spain.

Diverse experience

Take part in relevant activities/training eg scuba diving, wildlife photography, bird and bat ringing, finding dormice, tagging hares, identifying dragonflies and studying peregrine falcons. Most recently I have also been the judge for Bristol Grammar School's Wildlife Photography competition.
